#Every Child a Mathematical Thinker

At Langland Community School, we use the mastery approach to teach mathematics. We do so to ensure every child builds a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of maths. The process of mastering maths is a gradual, accumulative process experienced as each child progresses through the school; creating a tool for life. By using the Power Maths programme, a growth mindset is actively nurtured, encouraging problem solving and mathematical talk.

The small steps to learning including the use of the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach are key to supporting our children with a wide array of abstract concepts that challenge all learners. By using Power Maths alongside the CPA approach, we enable our children to tackle concepts in a tangible way with a strong emphasis placed upon modelling, explaining and demonstrating both by the teachers and children. By doing so, they have the opportunity to become mathematically fluent, problem solvers.
