Phonics and Reading

#Every Child a Writer #Every Child a Reader

At Langland Community School, a love of reading is promoted across the curriculum and a high emphasis is placed on this through our curriculum and school environment.

The Read Write Inc. programme is used to teach early reading in Early Years and Year 1. This provides children with tools and confidence they need to decode and encode and develops early reading comprehension skills. This is a cohesive and creative approach to teaching reading and is also used as an intervention for those children who need further support in the decoding aspect of reading in KS1 and KS2. Children’s reading books are matched to their phonics knowledge, allowing them to embed their learning both in school and at home and become fluent readers.

Our Talk for Reading (TfR) curriculum teaches reading skills through the exploration of quality and challenging texts. The TfR texts have been carefully selected to ensure children are experienced in ‘the five plagues of reading’ (Doug Lemov); archaic language, non-linear time sequences, misleading narrative/complex narrative, figurative/symbolic texts and resistant texts, enabling children to comprehend more complex texts and readying them for the challenges of the secondary curriculum.
